My Journey to the Great Wall at Juyongguan Pass

By Connie Liao from Longmen, Huizhou

It was at the crack of dawn on the 4th day of my journey in Beijing that we got up and then we spent more than one hour travelling by bus to the Juyongguan Pass.

Actually, I have already appreciated its beauty on TV programs many times before, but I couldn’t wait to get off the bus and hurried to have a look at it, as soon as the bus stopped.

Looking up when standing at the foot of the Great Wall, I clearly found that it was quite different from the one seen on TV. It stretched off into the distance, like a big dragon, beautiful beyond compare.

“...The Great Wall was originally built to keep out dangerous invaders. Today it’s a little more than a curiosity. ”the guide said, showing us the way in the front of the tour group. After appointing a time to meet other companions, I rushed to climb it ahead of them. On the way to the top, I had a friendly talk with an American boy who had come to China with his family. I told him that there is an old saying that he who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man. Maybe these words encouraged both of us, we got to the top without complaining being tired, hungry, thirsty and so on.

We passed several watchtowers along the Wall. My American friend asked me, “What were they used for?” “Sending a warning message.” I replied.

After thinking for a while, I added, “Suppose you are here, in this watchtower, and you want to let me know the enemy is coming. But I am in that one, then you can set a fire and I can see the light and smoke.”

Talking something about the Great Wall, we got to the top around thirty minutes later.

The higher you climb, the further you will see. It rang true to us especially when the mountains below completely emerged before our eyes. You couldn’t imagine how incredibly beautiful the scene was when you were standing on the top of the high and steep Juyongguan Pass.

Looking down, I found that many visitors were climbing, some of whom looked as small as ants. In spite of panting and sweat coming down, they didn’t give up and tried hard to get to the top. I said to my new friend, “The Great Wall was built all by hand without any modern machines, and tens of thousands of people taking part in th is giant project died. Thus the Great Wall came into existence.” He said nothing, enjoying the view silently. Seeing the Great Wall which was exchanged with blood and lives, a feeling of admiration sprang up from the bottom of my heart, and so it might be with him.

Soft wind blowing, the view was so attractive that we just didn’t want to leave. After a while, I saw a little girl whose face was printed a Chinese flag and Fuwa, Huanhuan on. Yeah, it would be the Beijing Olymics in two weeks time. For the past many years, we have been dying to bid for the Olympics. Facing the big challenge, we were never scared. Eventually, we have fulfilled our dream, and we were so delighted to see that the 2008 Olympic Games would be held in our capital, Beijing.

During my journey to the Great Wall at Juyongguan Pass, I have thought and learned a lot. There is not a shadow of doubt that the 5000-year-old culture along with the long serpentine Great Wall will keep on drawing people from all over the world on.

The old blocks under our feet, though stepped by millions of times, year in and year out, suffered from wind and rain, yet the extraordinary lustre of the Great Wall will never fade and the spirit of our nation will shine like a pearl in the long river of history, forever.
