Pride and Prejudice

Recently I have read a very well--known book, Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen from United Kingdom. Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, gave her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and ironic social comments have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The eternal support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer.

The story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books' such as The Big Read. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundant number of novels and stories

imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. In total, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide.

As for the main characters, they are Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bennet, Jane Bennet and so on. Elizabeth Bennet is the female leading role of the novel. The second of the Bennet daughters, she is 20

years old and is intelligent, lively, attractive and witty but with a tendency to judge on impression and perhaps to be a little on which she bases her judgments. Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy is the male leading role of the novel. Twenty-eight years old and unmarried, Mr. Darcy is also the rich owner of the famous family Heritage of Pemberley in Derbyshire, and is heard to be worth at least ten thousand pounds a year. He is handsome, tall, and intelligent, but rather anti-social, his social manners and integrity are seen by many as an excessive pride.

In my humble opinion, this famous book can reflect writer’s concept about marriage. It is wrong for people to get married just for bucks. But it is also unwise to do it without taking outer circumstances into account. But in this novel, Mr. Darcy gave her a proposal only to receive rejection. The reasons why he got rejection were that Elizabeth had much bias and Abhorrence to him especially hated his pride. But having seen series of Mr. Darcy’s reaction about solving matters, she gradually wiped out these disgusting and awful feelings. And at length, they stepped into the paradise of marriage and led a fantastic life.

Elizabeth has several different attitudes to Darcy’s proposals, which in fact reflects the personality of female independence and the pursuit of equal rights. That is to say, the figure, Elizabeth has a progressive significance in that age. It is a real reflection of the end of the

eighteenth Century to nineteenth Century when people led a conservative

and occlusion of the British town life. Whether it is Elizabeth or Darcy authors believe that positive characters, or ironic Collins. Such objects are written in a true and moving way. At the same time, Austen's language is through the temper, and she stresses the art of dialogue humor, satire. This kind of artistic innovation can make her work full of its own

characteristics. Pride and Prejudice is a combination of magic words and true feelings for best performance.

In today’s society, people are after nothing but bucks, which is absolutely wrong. And it is known to us that love built on money isn’t true love. We should build up a new concept of money. Money can not become a symbol of noble personality which is cultivated by

circumstances or other factors. All we need to do is establish our inner beauty such as confidence, wisdom, intelligence, optimism and so on. With time passing by, we may lose our money, but what we will never throw away is our unique personality. So in my daily life, I will pay more attention to my own personality rather than bucks. It can make a big difference in my future life, and will help me go through all difficulties. To sum up, we need to improve our full qualities covering rich

knowledge and outstanding personality. It is of great importance for us to focus on them. There is also no point in just pursuing the money which is not so essential as we expect. And I believe some day life will give us much privilege in return.
