Passage
“The future of the English”by J. B.Priestley, mainly talks about the English and the Englishness. (From ‘’ published by William Heinemann in 1973)
It is instinctive feeling and not rational thought that shapes and colors actual events in England.
The real English, who are ‘different’, who have inherited Englishness and have not yet thrown away their inheritance, cannot feel at home in the contemporary world, representing the accelerated development of our whole age. It demands bigness, and they are suspicious of bigness.
Englishness seems a poor shadowy show a faint pencil sketch beside a poster in full colour - belonging as it really does to the invisible inner world, merely offering states of mind in place of that rich variety of things. But then while things are important, states of mind are even more important.
Reaction
When read about Englishman, the first impression is gentleman. The British are both conservative and humorous The British tend to be familiar with things that are always suspicious of novelty or exotic.
The British people debate with the government for the feelings of compatriots, but also has the British people who lost their Englishness. Despite the different opinions, Britain is not as much of a fascist as any other country.
British people will accept the big things but they do not like it, and this phenomenon is also known as Admass. The British have obvious defeat in the conflict of the Englishness and Admass. The future of English is the result of this conflict, and the final victory may be Admass.
If the British characteristic compared to the ideal, then the Admass is a cruel reality. Reality has hindered the ideal of every person's heart. Usually, the ideal and the reality can only choose one of them. If you want to get all, you can't imagine the effort. Only few people did. .
