A terrible earthquake, measuring at 8.0Ms, struck Wenchuan County , Sichuan Province, China on May 12th ,2008. Being the strongest and deadliest earthquake to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake , it was felt as far as Beijing, which is 1,500 kilometers away and Shanghai, 1,700 kilometers away , causing 69,197 people to be confirmed dead , 374,176 injured , and 18,340 listed as missing. A great number of houses and buildings were destroyed, leaving as many as 10,000,000 people homeless and there were hill slides, with roads blocked as well as water supply , electricity and telecommunication cut off. People in the earthquake –hit areas are suffering greatly , so the Students ’ Union calls on us to donate a little money for the people there. In my opinion, this is what we can do to help those suffering even though we can not stop such natural disasters.

3 A big fire broke out in a great singing and dancing ball of Longgang, Shenzhen, Guangdong province late in September, 2008, which was caused by people lighting fireworks carelessly in it. Hundreds of firemen and local people fought bravely against the fire until it was completely put down. The fire lasted abut ten hours causing a damage of at five million yuan. 17 people were killed and more than 40 people were injured in the fire. It is reported that the earthquake was so strong that it caused 68,109 deaths and 364, thousand people were hurt.
